Exquis factory reset after a few power cycles when USB-midi-connected to an MPC

Hi everyone,

I’m a happy owner of (2) Exquis and want to use them with custom layouts. The steps described below have been conducted identically on the 2 devices. They both have been updated to firmware 3.0.0.

I used the Exquis app (version 3.0.0) to prepare some layouts, save them and drag them to the devices via the ‹ Standalone › dialog, as custom layouts 7 and 8. I took a few attempts to actually upload to the device, but I finally managed to make it work, following the advice given in the thread cited below ( closing the dialog ; counting 4 seconds ; unplugging the device ; closing the app - I did not make a note of exactly what sequences of actions failed ) (Note the app runs in a Windows11 VirtualBox under Linux, but this does not seem to be an issue) .

Then I tried to use the exquis standalone as a midi controllers for an MPC Live station. The USB connection provides at the same time midi input into the station and power: the exquis remained unpowered a few seconds before hooked to the MPC. It worked as expected when selecting layouts 7 and 8. When the MPC is shut down, the Exquis have no power any more, and I even believe that the custom layouts remained stored into the devices through a few power cycles.

But after a night… nothing had changed regarding the connections, then powering up the MPC again (> thus powering the Exquis), and the custom layouts had disappeared from the 2 exquis. The same for the 2 devices. Only 6 layouts available on each of them.

I understood that such a bug was already known since at least a year, as stated in this topic:

Am I doing something wrong ? Are there any news / patch / workaround ?

Any help appreciated!

Hello, that’s odd but thanks for confirming on two units at the same time

Can you tell if both Exquis were kind of Factory resetted (other settings such as tempo back to 120, default scales, root note back to C…), or if it was just a disappearance of those two layouts?

If you can reproduce the same steps and confirm the bug, it would help us understand if the problem is power-related maybe.

You can also try to replace existing layouts instead of putting them after the others, to check. Again, it may help us understand if the bug comes back or not if you try this.

Thanks for your quick answer!

Apart from the layouts, a few parameters could have been set differently from the factory default (rootG+minor scale instead of rootC+major scale, PolyAT instead of MPE). All of them were reseted to their default value.

For now I reloaded the custom layouts from the app ; this time I put them to slots 1 and 2, shifting the factory layouts to slots 3 to 8.

I unplugged and replugged the usb power from the computer a few times (say 3) and the custom config remains. 1st plug to the MPC , then MPC on : the custom config is there ; MPC off , then on : the custom config was resetted (on the 2 devices).

Then I tried MPC off-on a few times by only changing e.g. root note to D ; this was not erased through power cycles. Then I reloaded the custom layouts into the exquis, but this time, one of the devices (say, Exquis1) will stay plugged while powering off/on the station, while I will manually unplug Exquis2 before shutting the station down, and replug exquis2 after the MPC boot has finished.
By doing this, I suspected the boot sequence of the MPC or its shutdown to be the cause. (During boot up, if the exquis is plugged, I see the key lights turn on, then off, then on).
But after , say 5 power cycles, the bug did not reappear for neither exquis1 nor exquis2 (the custom layout are still available for now) …
That’s all for today ; I’ll try to keep you posted if I find any more clues.

Hi, quick update: this morning , exquis1 (the one that stayed plugged) was resetted after MPC boot up, while exquis2 (unplugged before shutdown and replugged after bootup) kept its memory. Does this leads to think that the MPC could send some sort of reset signal while booting? No time to dig more this morning but I will keep trying to reproduce this to see if this postulate may be correct.

Ok, so from now on, I will use the following connection setup : exquis connected to MPC via midi 1/8"-DIN and powered via USB wall outlet. And hope that the bug will not occur again. If it did anyway, I would let you know. Perhaps we should modify the topic title to « Exquis factory reset-ed after a few power cycles when USB-midi-connected to an MPC » but I may not have the permission to do it, or did not find how.

Bad news (… sort of …) : exquis experienced factory reset in the last configuration described above… But it still held out for more than a week… (whereas its twin remained intact, for now). The previous hypothesis is therefore incorrect… sorry
